My top tips for Valentine’s Day 2013

THREE MORE DAYS!

That’s what I’ve been telling myself all day because Valentine’s day is fast approaching! Now I know that a big ol’ bunch of you will dismiss it and think it’s just some massive corporate holiday to make money. I agree, but I also think that it’s a great excuse for a big expression of love and appreciation.

So if you’re a fairly regular reader then you’ll know that i’ve had a girlfriend for the past two and a half years. That means this is my third proper Valentine’s day and i’m beginning to get into the spirit of things. It’s nice to be able to treat my lovely girlfriend with lots of presents and surprises…but it can be a DEATHTRAP!…Ok that’s an exaggeration. But for a fellow N.A.S., it can be a tricky time of the year in terms of managing your allergy. Buying chocolates, getting chocolates, making dinners…it’s all about food! Like most holidays nowadays, this is a big foodie occasion. This means that it can be a nerve-wracking and tense time because you want to enjoy yourself without you know, dying!

Obviously, bringing up your allergy as you’re about to take a big bite into a homemade truffle or cupcake is perhaps the least romantic thing you can do, and rightly so! It could ruin the mood and make you feel self conscious. Luckily for you loved up followers though, I have some great hints and tips to allow you to make the most out of your Valentine’s day with your other half:

1. Giving gifts is supposed to be fun! – This is one for people buying prezzies for their partners with allergies. If your lovely boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife is allergic to nuts, then as a person that clearly loves them, take extra care to ensure that they don’t have to worry. You could avoid buying food for your other half, or even better buy or make special nut-friendly food just for them! As a sufferer myself, I can tell you that the thought and consideration that goes into making chocolates for your partner is GREATLY appreciated.

2. Receiving gifts is supposed to be fun too! (obviously!) – This is basically just a continuation of the other tip, but from the other person’s perspective. If you’re worried that your boyfriend or girlfriend is going to buy or make you something with nuts in it or that you feel uneasy about eating, then you don’t know them at all! If you’re a couple truly in love, then you should just trust the other person to consider your allergies and respect them when choosing a gift! Don’t worry! It’s supposed to be fun!

3. Reminder! – If you still feel uncertain about the present that your partner is getting you or are worried at all, simply give them a subtle reminder about your allergy to jog their memory and ease your worry. Something even as simple as saying “Those chocolates look really good, it’s a shame I probably won’t be able to eat them because of my allergy”, as you walk past a chocolatier. Believe me, this’ll give your dopey partner the kick up the bum they need to remember your allergy.

So those are the top tips that I use on Valentine’s day to ensure a good time is had by all! The best thing to keep in the back of your mind is that if you’re worried or uneasy, you’re dating this person for a reason, because you love them! If they don’t respect your allergies or care about your safety or well-being, then perhaps this should be their LAST Valentine’s day.

Hope you all have a great day and try not to worry too much, just have FUN! Thanks for reading!

  1. Excellent post regarding Valentine’s Day. I like how you break it down from all view points. I hope you and your girl friend enjoy a fabulous Valentine’s Day too! I wasn’t sure quite honesty if folks in England have also been sucked into this holiday (which I love too)

  2. Hi! I am here to award you with the ‘Very Inspiring Blogger’ Award. Susan at The Food Allergy Chronicles awarded the honour to my blog, and I wanted to pass along the award to you as well. I love reading about your challenges with peanut allergies. I am allergic as well, and it can be such a challenge to deal with.
